Have you ever seen a piece of fan art that makes you stop in your tracks and say, "Damn! Look at that!"?
That's how I felt the first time I saw the amazing artwork by Todd Reis. The breath taking 3D effect that he is able to achieve with Comic Book covers is astounding.
Todd has been making his DC and Marvel Masterpieces since 1973-1974. He originally began his 3D art, with a small craft kit and was making Christmas cards with them. This later progressed to his passion of Comic Books.
Imagine Todd's surprise in 1974 when he went to San Diego Comic Con and saw another artist had the same idea. A one, Mr. Jeff Gelb. Also talented, Jeff's 3-4 layer 3D art lacked the depth that Todd was looking for. "Most picture frames smoosh together the art, they don't really allow for what I want..." he says. He proceeds to tell me how he started making his own frames for his art.
"...by no means am I a carpenter, so you can imagine the early frames were fairly crude..." He says. Throughout the years, Todd has tried many different techniques and styles of making his art come to life.
"I used to use multiple copies of the issue of that comic book. In the 80's I toyed around with xerox copies, but they lacked the color I needed and wanted." He proceeds to go on about how laser printing and scan copies nowadays are supremely better. Taking an Average of 20-30 hours a piece, most of his shadow boxes are one of a kind.
"In 1993, I was asked to do DC commissioned 12 3Ds. 3 of each of 4 Death of Superman Title covers. as a gift to the crew who worked on the book." Talk about an Honor! WOW!
With celebrity, artist, illustrator endorsements from people like, Jack Kirby(Avengers, X-men) & John Byrne (Sensational She-Hulk, Fantastic Four, X-men), it's no wonder that Todd's art is highly sought after.
“What most of us are doing in comics is trying to overcome a single insurmountable obstacle: the third dimension. Many have found ways of creating fabulous illusions of speed and scope, but few, if any, have ever given a true illusion of depth. Todd has simply skipped that step altogether. There is no illusion here. This is reality. You don’t simply get the FEELING of being able to reach into the picture, of being able to see AROUND the characters, YOU CAN. And all this without violating the inherent form of the original work. I love ‘em" -John Byrne
