It’s no big secret that aside from blowing stuff up and going to the range, I am also a huge Comic geek and Pop culture nerd. So When I saw the Photo Noir comic “Red Bloods” I about flipped my sh*t! A perfect mashup of all I hold near and dear. I reached out to Jason Swarr the creator and photographer of “Red Bloods” and we chatted for a good bit. A Marine Comic book maker and a FMF Corpsman Fan Boy that writes blogs for Tactical Shit. What could go wrong?
Spike- How long have you been in to comics?
Jason- I’ve been a pop culture nerd my whole life. Maybe more of a closet nerd since I was kinda a jock in high school and did 20 years in the Marines. But I’ve always been a fan of comics.
Spike- What is your Military/Tactical Background?
Jason- Joined the Marines in 1991 and finished my career in 2011. Started out as a parachute rigger and found out that I really sucked at it and then crossed decked in the 0321 field (Reconnaissance Marine). Combat tours in Somalia and Iraq and then did my twilight tour as a Military Free Fall Instructor at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School in Yuma AZ. Went to some cool places, did some cool shit. Trust me though; I’m far from a war hero. Just an average Jar-head that grinded it out for 20 years.
Spike- Why the Noir’esque style of photography instead of cartoon drawing?
Jason- Great question….easy answer. I can’t draw. I’m talking not even a stick figure. I can see it in my mind….but my brain doesn’t coordinate with my hand. So, I took another route and studied at the University of Youtube until I learned composite photography.
Spike- What is your Inspiration for your Characters and Story line?
Jason- I love action movies. I love America. The story line just fell into place. I wanted the characters to be real. Bad ass patriots, but still normal people. Just like our real special operations guys. They will go out at night, shoot people in the faces for a few hours and then come back and read Mad magazine.
Spike- Where do you see the series going?
Jason- Red Bloods started out as a marketing piece for Shot Show 2015. We didn’t know how the tactical industry would handle it. Honestly, I thought we would get laughed out of the building. Man was I wrong. The fan support was amazing. I had so many people come tell me that they haven’t been this excited about a comic in 20 years. Now we have built a fan base in the 20 thousands and are growing everyday. Our sponsors are amazing as well. They took the risk of putting their names on a “comic” and we truly appreciate it. These are the companies that aren’t afraid to think outside the box. These are the companies I spend my money on at the end of the day.
Spike- What is your favorite sidearm?
Jason- Man, I’ve always been a Glock guy. I carry a G19 daily. Then Zev Technologies jumped on board as a sponsor and I got my hands on one of their customs. Now I get the best of both worlds carrying a glock on steroids. Not gonna lie, its hard not to open carry with that work of art. I want to show the world! Ha ha!
Spike- What is your favorite long gun?
Jason- That’s a tough one. I’m not a “real” long range shooter nor was I sniper in the Corps. But my favorite 308’s are Patriot Ordnance Factories P308 and Grey Ghost Precisions Spector Heavy. If you haven’t been behind either of these, stop reading this and get to the range now. They are tack drivers!
Spike- Favorite comic that isn’t yours and why?
Jason- My favorite comics are old school Sgt Rock and 1980’s Punisher. I love retro comics. Maybe I’m showing my age now.
Spike- Any movie possibilities for Red Bloods?
Jason- Good question. Obviously that’s the goal. We have been approached by 2 different production companies recently and they have expressed interest. I’m not holding my breath, but I know they are watching to see where we go with Issue 3. Maybe I’m bias, but I think this would make a kick ass series. If anybody out there agrees, go tell HBO and Cinemax to get off their asses and make it happen!
Spike- How was San Diego Comic Con?
Jason- San Diego Comic Con was surreal. Believe it our not, it’s not our audience. 90% of Red Bloods fans are the gun guys, airsofters and the gamers. Hard core comic readers hate photo comics. I was there to change their mind and show them it could be done right. After it was over, I feel I can give it the ol’ George Bush “Mission Accomplished”. Ha Ha! Everybody who saw it, loved it. Either that or they were afraid to tell a 6’2” tattoo’ed Marine anything different.
Spike- Were there a lot of smoking hot CosPlay ladies?
Jason- Ummm yeah…..no shortage my friend. Actually we found a new model for Red Bloods. She is a Navy Veteran turned Cos-Player named Diesel Mary. She is a bad ass and will make a nice addition to Issue 3. Check her out on IG @dieselmary
